The time is ripe for women in Kenya to take on leadership positions. The country’s 2010 constitution calls for improved gender balance in county government at the same time that it increases counties’ decision-making power and control over financial resources. These changes set the stage for women to play a critical – and unprecedented – role in shaping their communities.
But few women have emerged to assume local leadership positions. They don’t feel prepared for leadership, or entitled to it. And so, the county seats reserved for women remain empty.
WGLG-Kenya is stepping into the breach. Through a media campaign that highlights powerful female leaders from throughout the Global South, and partnerships that link these stories with community organizations’ efforts to train the next generation of women leaders, WGLG-Kenya will provide the inspiration, the conversations, and the connections that encourage women to seize this historic opportunity.
